Nizar N. Oweida, MD, FACS, Scholarship

The Oweida Scholarship is available to an ACS member in any surgical specialty who meets the following requirements:

• Is a Fellow or Associate Fellow under age 55 on the date the application is filed
• Is serving a small town or rural community in the US or Canada

• Applicants must submit a fully completed online application form.
• Applicants must attach a one- to two-page essay discussing the following specific topics: 
  • Information regarding their work setting, including their hospital and the patients they see, as well as their participation in quality improvement activities in this setting
  • The opportunity for which they are applying (Clinical Congress attendance or a personal training or research project)
  • Their reasons for submitting an application
  • Their qualification for the scholarship
  • They must also indicate their career goals, indicating how they plan to transfer their newly acquired learning to their current situation. 

• Awardees may use their award stipend to either:
  • Attend Clinical Congress or
  • Execute a well-defined proposal for travel or research to improve his or her performance as a rural surgeon. 
• The Oweida Scholarships must be used in the year for which they are designated. They cannot be postponed.
• The Oweida Scholars will provide a narrative and financial report of their experiences at the conclusion of their awarded activity.

Cost categories include travel expenses, lodging and per diem, registration, and course fees.

Scholars will make their own travel arrangements.

The family and friends of Nizar N. Owieda established funding for annual scholarships for ACS fellows serving a small town or rural community in the US or Canada.
